A Guide to The Regulations Governing Commercial Trucking 

Commercial trucking companies are governed federally by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMSCA). Mandatory regulations issued by the FMSCA are published and updated regularly. Failure to comply with these regulations can result in civil penalties and fine payments. Rules include a limit to the number of hours that a driver can operate a commercial vehicle, experience, and licensing requirements, truck maintenance logs and updates, drug and alcohol testing and weight requirements for commercial vehicles.

The NTEA – The Association for the Work Truck Industry provides information regarding regulations and is a policy advocate for the industry.

Each state can lay out their own requirements for obtaining a commercial driver's license, alcohol and drug testing, transportation of hazardous materials, cargo requirements and many other regulations.

Commercial trucking companies are usually required to register under the Unified Carrier Registration Act of 2005 and pay fees associated with any interstate commerce.
